Musical Analysis #1

Drake

"Jungle"

Drake is one of my all time favorite artists. When "Jungle" was released in February of 2015 on his "If You're Reading This Is Too Late" Album my love for his music did nothing but grow. When listening to this song specifically, I experience a wave of emotion. On my good and or bad days, this is a song I play and instantly become connected to my inner thoughts and feelings and begin to feel my emotions on a different level. This song is a song I can play anywhere, any day and any time.

Lyrics

The lyrics that Drake is singing all tie into the way he feels about someone and how that someone makes him feel the way he is feeling. This songs almost forces me to think back to times someone has made me feel a certain way. Even if I could not relate to the song, the lyrics themselves cause an explosion of thoughts in your head. As he is singing these lyrics, the main points are how he does not care about what others have to say and how muchhe cares, misses and loves the other person.

Beat and Tempo

The beat and tempo throughout this song seem to remain the same. The tempo of the song is more on the slow end which allows us listeners to calm down. It sets the mood for the song. The beat seems to sound upbeat at some points but it is just the sound getting louder. Just listening to the instrumental of this song tells you it is more of a chill vibe coming off of it. The perfect sound is created to match the lyrics, stimulating more of a connection and more mellow feeling when listening.

Dynamics

The song starts out soft. The beat in the back is loud, but the lyrics being sang are soft. This beginning sets the mood for the remainder of the song. The lyrics are very sentimental type so the sound being soft brings more emotion to the table. It connects well throughout the song. It then gets medium loud sometimes throughout the song and during those part, the lyrics seem to show more of a "hurt" side. The dynamic change from soft to medium loud shows the change in mood for this particular song.

"Drake doesn't just proclaim his skills, at last he demonstrates them," is what was stated in a New York Times Article. This song, "Jungle" and the whole album, "If You're Reading This It's Too Late" was loved by many across the world. "... the tracks that Drake released... hit harder and hold together more cohesively than most big-budget event albums..." Drakes song got many favorable views overall but there are many who still believe that he is "overrated." I myself, do not believe that Drake get enough credit for the work he puts out but we all have our opinions.
