How Music Serves Society

How Music Serves Society

Music is used in many different ways and plays a huge role in everyones life.  Music is usually seen as an escape from certain problems for different individuals. It is a way humans are able to express themselves without really talking things we go through. Music is that free outlet. In this society, us people turn to music and sometimes begin to feel whole again. It sets the mood in different situations and lets us know that there are other people around the world feeling the same way that we do. Looking deeper into music, the sounds being played behind the lyrics showcase true feeling and the lyrics is what clears things up. Music either puts us deep in our thoughts or gets us up and out of our feelings. Music does not only allow us to express ourselves, it also can bring attention to certain things that are occurring around us today, more of an informational outlook. There are obviously many reasons as to why music is such an important thing in society.

Same Love was sang and composed by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Mary Lambert was also a composer. This song was released back in 2012, Washington is the Origin. The beat and tempo in this song are very slow paced but speeds up depending on the tone of the artist singing. As the tone increases, so does the speed of the beat and tempo. While that is happening, the mood of the song is already set. More of a serious feeling is felt. The lyrics are telling more than a story. It is the expression of an actual life and what they are going through while they live day to day. This song for sure made individuals who are experiencing the same feelings and living a life similar feel more comfortable being themselves knowing they are not alone. The sharp yet mellow dynamic helps the song flow and feel more like a congratulations rather than sad feeling.

Planet Rock is by Afrika Bambaataa and Soul Sonic Force and was released in 1982. Afrika Bambaataa, Arthur Baker, John Robie, John Miller and Ronald Isely are the composers of this song. The Origin of this song is in The Bronx, New York. This song starts with the lyrics "party people, party people, can ya'll get funky?"Already initiating the mood of the song. The beat instantly drops and the tempo is fast from the beginning which gets me up and moving automatically. The dynamics are very loud which keeps the mood up and fun. The sound the song gives off doesn't even allow you to not want to get up and move. The articulation is very sharp which helps bring out different sounds being played in the back. This is a song played when in a more up and lively mood, expressing fun and good energy.

These two songs alone show two different ways music can be viewed by individuals in society. They both display their own unique sound which shows how different others are able to express themselves with music, alone. The first song, Same Love seems more like a sad, mellow song but it is sending a message to those around and it is easy to connect to and feel the emotion. The second song, Planet Rock expresses more of a lively vibrant mood, which allows us to look at the bright side of things and makes us just want to enjoy our lives while we are able to live it.

  1. So true! I love that music serves so many purposes in our lives, it can help us get over something sad or really get amped up and ready to have a good time. Music can be used to set the tone of a gathering or help us cope if we are mad. I found this article on Harvard Health that said, "Surgeons have long played their favorite music to relieve stress in the operating room, and extending music to patients has been linked to improved surgical outcomes. In the past few decades, music therapy has played an increasing role in all facets of healing." Really interesting that music may have healing benefits! Here is the link for the article! Great post!

  2. I really enjoyed your blog and I agree with you as well. Music helps us on so many levels. Bryan Resnick also states that "Studies have shown that when we listen to music, our brains release dopamine, which in turn makes us happy." I agree with him because when I am not feeling my best, I play some music to help soothe myself. I'm sure there are many, many other who listen to music to soothe their souls.
